After this year´s extremely hot and sunny summer our skin can display many changes that we did not notice before, esp. colour and pigmentary changes. The colour of our skin is made by so-called melanocytes, i. e. cells which lie in the inferior layer of the skin. Not only those cells determine a skin colour of every individual throughout his life, but they also change the innate skin colour, mostly as a consequence of UV-radiation, but also in connection with skin and internal organ diseases. Skin colour disorders can be divided in two groups, a hyperpigmentation (excessive pigmentation) and a depigmentation (deficient pigmentation). In both groups, many diseases are included, some of them are very rare, some are very common (i. e. after a skin lesion, a pigment can set in the scar). Let´s have a look at two diseases, each from one of those two groups, which rank among the most frequent ones, melasma a vitiligo.
