Melasma

Melasma (the name comes from the greek word „melas“ = black)
is an acquired hyperpigmentation localized in face or neck. Its cause is still unknown, but genetic influences and those of solar radiation have been proved. That´s why this disease is examined in course of pregnancy, in case of hormonal contraception use or ovary tumours. Some cosmetics and medicaments can contribute to rise of the disease, too. The disease affects mostly women, men constitute only 10 % of patients.

A clinical count of the melasma is very varied – from one dark brown spot to numerous spots of irregular forms. It is usually symetrically placed on forehead, cheeks, nose, upper lip, chin, and sometimes on neck.

The melasma is a cosmetic problem, among many patients it can cause psychical problems and a loss of self-confidence. In addition to that, curing facilities are not illimited and in some cases, the melasma can re-appear.

The main principle of melasma cure is photoprotection, i. e. a complete prevention of any contact with solar radiation. Because melanocytes can get stimulated by both UVA- and UVB-radiation, a patient has to use creams with protective anti-solar filters (SPF 30 and more), to use them daily throughout the year instead of a hydratation cream. Of course he mustn´t sunbathe. Those women who use contraception pills have to cease the cure. The cure itself includes a use of whitening cosmetics, chemical peeling and lasers. Your dermatologist will choose the best medical treatment and the best photoprotective for you.
